War Rally and Scoring Bug

An issue was brought to our attention today regarding War Rally being given to the Exiles, despite the Exiles being ahead in damage.

We set out to look for any issues in how War Rally was determined, how it was displayed, or any other problems that might exist with the system. After some time, we were completely unable to find any problems. We simulated Rallies on our dev environment and every time it looked to be working as intended. What was going on?

Finally, while looking through the database for issues, we found something clearly off. One of the objectives had taken *significantly* more damage than possible.

Database values

This is a picture of the actual data in our database. The maximum health of the Hovercraft is 4,091,000. The damage dealt to it so far was over 6.7 million. Obviously this was not intended, so we set about finding the cause. It turns out that we were incorrectly dealing damage to this Hovercraft instead of the correct one when Legion players bombed them.

The war bar you see at the top of the game was not accounting for all of this extra damage dealt, and so it appeared that the Legion side was again falling far behind the Exiles. In reality, the Legion was keeping pace, and the war has actually remained very close this entire time. There were no problems with the War Rally system -- when the Exiles were given a Rally, it is because they were actually behind!

To fix the issue, we'll take the servers down, patch the bug that was dealing damage to the destroyed Hovercraft, and split the extra damage between the remaining Hovercrafts. The Legion score that you see afterwards is the accurate damage that has been dealt during the war in the Overlord Facility.

Patch Notes - 1.6.9

War Video

Still confused about the war mechanics? Check out this new video narrated by the one and only Titan!

BALANCE CHANGES:

  • Hatchling Rush
    • This skill has been generally a bit too strong with a high debuff and full damage. We're bringing these down a bit to make it more manageable.
    • Damage lowered from 100% to 85% strike damage
    • Healing reduction lowered from 50% to 40%
  • Necrosis
    • In comparison to other defense debuffs, this skill was simply providing too much reduction for little cost.
    • Defense and Resistance debuff reduced
    • At level 40, final round reduction lowered from 130 to 102
  • Azrael's Will
    • While Azrael's Will provides a very strong effect, the energy cost was causing it to be underused.
    • Energy cost reduced from 200 to 175
  • Azrael's Torment
    • Energy cost reduced from 150 to 140

  • While we want energy management and manipulation to be an important aspect of battle, it is still more of a focus in battle than we intend. This, coupled with effective heal looping led us to make a number of changes to energy skills, mainly increased cooldowns for no-cost skills and lowered drain effects.
  • Fireball
    • Since Blood Mages tend to have a tougher time regenerating energy as the battle goes on, we lowered the cost of their main attacks to compensate.
    • Energy cost lowered by 10 at all levels
  • Plasma Cannon
    • See Fireball
    • Energy cost lowered by 10 at all levels
  • Battery Backup
    • Cooldown increased from 4 to 5 turns
  • Assimilation
    • Cooldown increased from 3 to 4 turns
    • Energy drain lowered by 10 at all levels
  • Static Grenade
    • Cooldown increased from 3 to 4 turns
    • Energy drain lowered by 10 at all levels
  • Static Smash
    • Cooldown increased from 3 to 4 turns
    • Energy drain lowered by 3% at all levels
    • Energy gain increased to 80% from 75% of the amount drained
  • Static Charge
    • Cooldown increased from 3 to 4 turns
  • EMP Grenade
    • Energy drain reduced by 10 at all levels
  • Atom Smasher
    • Energy drain reduced by 3% at all levels
  • Energy Parasite
    • Added a minimum gain of 10 Energy per turn

BALANCE CHANGES:

NOTE: For additional information and discussion on these changes, please visit the forums HERE.

-Battle Duration Adjustments-
In general we feel that battles are ending a little too quickly, especially in 1v1. With so few turns available in the average fight, strategic options become limited, and certain events in battle such as critical strikes and blocks have a bit too much impact.

  • Health per stat point has been increased to 1.25 from 1. Now every 4 stat points will give +5 Max Health.
  • The base damage of all weapons (Primary, Gun, and Auxiliary) has been lowered by 2.
  • Critical Strikes now ignore 30% of defenses, down from 45%
  • Critical Strike minimum damage is now 3-5, down from 4-7. Increases at level 15 and 30.

-Energy Flow Adjustments-
With recent updates adding energy costs to cores, and reworking passive skills into useable skills, energy management has become much more important. We feel that this is an important aspect to managing the pace of a fight, but certain things are a little out of line, so we want to review the system in general to make it fit better with the updated skills.

  • Energy per stat point has been increased to 1.25 from 1. Now every 4 stat points will give +5 Max Energy
  • EMP Grenade
    • Base energy drain increased from 7-24 to 12-27
    • Increased cooldown from 2 to 3 turns
    • Level scaling removed
  • Atom Smasher
    • Increased cooldown from 2 to 3 turns
    • Increased drain amount by 2% at all levels
  • Static Charge
    • Now unblockable
    • Cannot critically hit or Rage
    • Increase cooldown from 2 to 3
    • increase amount from 22-37% to 40-70%
  • Static Smash
    • Lower drain from 43-73% to 38-68%
  • Bounty Hunter EMP Grenade has been replaced by Static Grenade
    • Has a base energy drain of 10-25
    • Steals 50% of energy drained
    • 0 Energy cost, 3 turn cooldown
    • Gains +1 energy drain every 4.5 Tech
  • Battery Backup
    • Lower base energy gain from 20-45 to 20-35
    • Fixed a bug where level scaling was not working properly
  • Assimilation
    • Increased energy steal by 4 at all levels
    • Now steals 50% of energy drained, down from 100%
  • Energy Parasite
    • In cases where the enemy has more than 150 Energy, it will work as though they had 150 Energy instead. This is intended to only affect NPC battles.

-General Balance-

  • Plasma / Mineral Armor
    • Increased defenses from 15-60% to 30-100%
    • No longer affected by stat buffs and debuffs
    • Fixed a bug where duration was 3 turns instead of 4
  • Hybrid Armor
    • Increase defenses from 10-30% to 15-50%
    • No longer affected by stat buffs and debuffs
    • Fixed a bug where duration was 3 turns instead of 4

Yaaaaar Design Notes

Mwahahaha!

After a brief hiatus for DragonCon and other important real-life events, the EpicDuel team is finally assembled at full strength. The problem is we only had 3 day to build a release (technically one full day and 2 half-days if you include planning and release testing)! We were so tight on time that I just got around to the Design Notes now. It's like I'm typing live! Anyway, no more wasting time...let's get down to it!

Administrator 10

Fighting in the Dread Plains has gotten so heated that Alydriah has ordered Administrator 10 to oversee battle operations directly. Normally content to manipulate events from behind the scenes, the Administrator has a nasty battle record that keeps his troops loyal and his enemies in a constant state of fear. He is also an extreme hypochondriac and wears a gas mask constantly to prevent himself from breathing in the irradiated vapor and toxic dust that blows across the Dread Plains. This, combined with his notable paranoia and disrespect for authority makes him an exceptionally unpredictable and dangerous foe.

Mission Organization

This week we've also made improvements to mission organization. Completed, pending, and unavailable missions are now color-coded and sorted for easy navagation!

Mission Organization

Talk Like a Pirate Again!

Yaaaaaaar! Since we've fixed the error with the seasonal rare scheduler, we are able to reintroduce the Talk Like a Pirate Day-themed rares! It turns out that the error was due to a single misplaced letter among the dozens of lines of code -- like finding a needle in a needle-stack! Visit Big Tuna in the West Naval Yard to check them out!

Yarrrr

Also, the Talk Like a Pirate achievement will also be returning!

Additionally, yarrrr!

Yarrrrrrrrr!

Because of this error, the Titan weapons were removed early. We have returned them for one more week! Thanks to Rabble's hard work on this system, we will now be able to add and remove items to merchants without rebooting the server, making it easier to get the right gear into the right hands!

Bye, Bye, Botanical Gear!

Since Fall is on the horizon (for those of us in the Northern Hemisphere, anway) we felt it was time to retire the Botanical Gear and the Botanical Borg promotional packages.

Bye Bye Botanical Gear!

If you managed to snatch them up, good job! If not, you'll have another go at them next year around Springtime to add them to your robust arsenal.

Coming Soon

All the battling in the desolate Dread Plains has begun to stir the local wildlife. Normally shy but curious Dire Wolves and Goat Lizards have begun to creep into the warzone. Will they align with Legion or Exile forces?

Coming Soon!

I hope they're on my team!

Mini Mid Week Release!

Without time this week to work on a huge fun filled release, the EpicDuel team decided it was best to go on a mission bug hunt and make further improvements to the New Mission system. Titan is also making more changes to the player’s user experience by polishing up the new mission interface. You’ll notice minor changes in how you interact with NPC’s this week, this will hopefully streamline and reduce the number of clicks you need to do in order to access mission content.  These are small changes, but we really hope they improve your game play experience!

NPC Notifiers

Notice MEEEEEEEE!

Naomi has a question for you!  New to EpicDuel this week is the New Mission NPC Notify System. Now if a NPC has something for you to do, like a mission you’ve been putting off, that npc will let you know with a notify indicator above their head. The same indicator icon will be carried throughout the flow of finding and accepting any new missions. All the maps with NPC’s had to be updated to support this change.  Which you can imagine, took up most of the development time.

No new missions this week. More time is needed to fully develop and test any new missions. We also need more time to implement and fully test the Daily Mission features. Which are in the coming soon bucket!  The EpicDuel team returns from their mini hiatus on Sept 3rd. So there is no release scheduled for this Friday. Will be back to full EpicDuel power next week!
